Smoke police begin crackdown on newly illegal chimney fires
Beginning at noon Wednesday, it became illegal for the residents of nine Bay Area counties to start a fire in their fireplaces or outdoor fire pits.

More Santa Clara County homes changed hands last month than during ultra-slow October 2007, but median prices fell sharply compared to last year. Previously foreclosed properties accounted for more than one-third of sales in the county.
